Return Policy

What can be returned?
The vast majority of the items we sell may be returned, however some items are not returnable. Items that are special ordered (like windows, pre-hung doors, and millwork) may not be returned. This does not include stock items. 

Until when can I return goods?
Goods may be returned within 90 days of purchase for a full-refund if they are in resalable like new condition. All returns must be inspected and approved for refund by an approved lumberyard employee before a refund will be issued.

What does it cost?
In nearly all cases there are no additional fees (restocking fees) when you return your merchandise to Cottle's Lumber. Unless we made an error, or the product is defective, you are responsible for bringing the merchandise back to us. 

How do I get my stuff back To you?
We strive to make our return process easy and efficient. You have two easy ways to return your merchandise to us:

  • In-Store Return: You can bring your item(s) back to any Cottle's Lumberyard location. You must provide the receipt to return merchandise, unless it was originally charged to your house account.

  • If you have large and/or heavy merchandise, and it's within our local deliver area (the main island of Martha's Vineyard, not including Chappy, you may contact us and arrange for a Cottle's Lumber truck to swing by and pick up your material at our earliest convenience. A fee may apply for Chappy pick-ups.)

How do I get my money?
If the original merchandise was charged to a house account we are able to look up purchase and issue a refund to your account, or a check, within 7 days of receipt, after the good are inspected and considered in good condition for resale. For a non-house account, after the goods are inspected, if the receipt is present, we will refund in the original form or payment (cash, check, or credit card) unless it is a large cash amount that may required a check be issued and mailed within 7 days of return.

How long will it take?
We strive to process returns as quickly as possible. Typically we will process a return and issue a refund within 5-7 business days after we receive it. Returns that arrive with proper paperwork and in good condition will see the shortest processing time.

Eligible Merchandise

Regular Stock Items
Most of the items we offer in our yards are "regular stock" items. Regular stock items can be returned without fee or restriction (subject to the conditions below). 

Special Order and Non-Stock Items
Some of the items we sell are special ordered or non-stock items. Examples would include some windows, pre-hung doors, and millwork. All special or non-stock orders of $500 or more must have a signature from the client approving the final order before Cottle's Lumber will place the order. The customer is responsible for ensuring that the order is to their specifications before Cottle's places the order. Any difference between the final approved order by the client and the actual order that arrives may be considered as a mistake on Cottle's part. Otherwise, if the order is placed as indicated on the signed order the order is considered correct.

If Cottle's Lumber made a mistake when ordering your customized merchandise, and it turns out not to be appropriate for your use, we will do what it takes to remedy the situation. 

"Clearance" Items
Final clearance items purchased are sold on an all sales final basis, and cannot be returned.

Gift Cards
Cottle's Lumber gift cards are non-returnable and cannot be redeemed or exchanged for cash, check or credit (unless required by law).

Shipping Charges
Shipping charges do not apply when you return your merchandise in person at one of our yards. Please note that the original shipping charges incurred on your purchase are not refundable as part of your return or exchange.

We will not charge you for return shipping if the reason for the return is:

  • due to an error on our part

  • because the merchandise is defective, or is missing parts/pieces
